Our council and the role:
This is a newly created, senior leadership position designed to strengthen management resilience and support the delivery of high-quality services, with a particular focus on the town’s open spaces, environment and community wellbeing.
Petersfield Town Council serves the residents of Petersfield, Hampshire, a vibrant and active market town in the beautiful countryside of the South Downs National Park. The town has a rich social, sporting and creative culture, as well as a thriving High Street with a mix of independent retailers, cafes and restaurants, making it a much desired place to live and visit.
Petersfield’s unique charm also makes it a fantastic place to work and you will quickly become embedded in its friendly and active community, working with partners and residents to enhance the key features of the town.
Duties will include:
- Providing senior leadership support to the Town Clerk and contributing to the operational management of the Council.
- Deputising for the Town Clerk in their absence.
- Leading the work of the Sports, Recreation and Environment Committee to oversee the management aspiration of delivering high quality, sustainable public open spaces.
- Assisting with the Council’s strategic development and working with the Town Clerk to deliver the Council’s strategic objectives across all functions.
- Working collaboratively to ensure compliance with Council policy and modelling service excellence.
- Leading on all contractual and legal matters, in conjunction with the Town Clerk where appropriate.
- Supporting the Town Clerk on various employment and people management matters.
- Implementation and tracking of project based work.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Certificate in Local Council Administration (including LO 7 – GPC) or commitment to achieve this within 12 months of joining.
- Proven management experience, including people management, contractor management and relationship building.
- Strong planning and organisational skills to deliver practical projects with multiple deadlines and criteria. The ability to successfully juggle a variety of unrelated tasks simultaneously will be essential to the role.
- Strong team spirit and excellent interpersonal skills to engage effectively with colleagues, contractors, partners and the local community.
- An understanding of the legal framework under which Councils operate.
- Competent IT skills.
- Excellent written, verbal and numeracy skills.
